No sir, we still routinely intubate patients for severe refractory hypoxia/hypoxemia. That was the indicator then and remains a common indicator for rapid sequence intubation now. Im not sure about the quote you read. Im only speaking from my personal experience in critical care and unfortunately as a front line covid nurse. We were treating the symptoms that the patients presented with. The symptom was refractory respiratory failure.
The issue is believing we need to or should be preventing symptoms of illness. Our bodies are designed to thrive symbiotically with our environment.
